A dampening pin

SPX held positive gamma all day. Spot orbited the flip and never reached either wall.

Loading session…

  1. 09:30Open: net gamma positive, spot 7,504, flip 7,469, walls 7,600 and 7,400. The book is long gamma and set to fade both sides.
  2. 11:00Spot pushes to 7,524. Long gamma hedging sells the strength; the rally stalls well below the call wall.
  3. 12:50Back to 7,480, above the flip. Each swing is smaller than the last, the signature of a dampening range.
  4. 16:00Close near 7,504, back where it opened. The pin won the day one swing at a time, exactly as the sign predicted.

The read held here. It does not always. Every SPX level is scored nightly in Track Record, held and broke side by side.

Short gamma, below the flip

SPY sat under its flip in negative gamma. The same board that damps SPX was set to amplify here.

Loading session…

  1. 09:30Open: spot 745, flip 750, walls 760 and 740. Spot below the flip means the book is short gamma and leaning with the move.
  2. 12:00Spot drifts toward 744, closer to the put wall. In this regime a break lower feeds on itself.
  3. 16:00Range holds between 745 and 749. The put wall at 740 was never tested to breaking; short gamma does not force a break, it removes the brake.

This is the regime where walls break most. The put wall held this session; Track Record scores the sessions where it did not.

Self-check

Say what a dampening session does to the range.

It compresses it around the heaviest strike.

Long gamma hedging sells rallies and buys dips, so each swing gets smaller.

State where the board publishes its misses.

Track Record, scored nightly against what price did.

Held and broke print side by side; the misses are the point, not the fine print.

Recall which regime is where levels break most.

Amplifying. Negative gamma, hedging leans with the move.

Walls hold less often when the book is short gamma and forced to chase.
